Halloween: From Ancient Rituals to Modern Fun
Halloween, celebrated every October 31st, is much more than just costumes and candy. Its origins date back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the end of harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits to walk the earth. To ward off these ghosts, people would light bonfires and wear costumes made of animal skins.
The tradition of carving pumpkins into Jack-o'-lanterns actually originated from an Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack who tricked the devil and was doomed to roam the earth with only a hollowed-out turnip containing a burning coal. When Irish immigrants arrived in America, they discovered that pumpkins, native to the region, were perfect for carving. Thus, the pumpkin Jack-o'-lantern tradition was born!
Trick-or-treating evolved from several European traditions, including the medieval practice of "souling," where poor people would go door-to-door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in exchange for prayers for the dead. The phrase "trick-or-treat" first appeared in print in the 1920s, reflecting the playful threat that mischief would be caused if no treat was offered.
