Cold Dew: Your Guide to China's 5th Solar Term of Autumn

    2025-10-08

Mark your calendars for around October 8th: this is the start of Cold Dew (Hánlù, 寒露), the 17th of China's 24 solar terms and the 5th of autumn. More than just a poetic name, it's a critical juncture in the annual climate calendar, offering a clear signal that the mild autumn is giving way to the crisp prelude of winter.

Scientifically, Cold Dew begins when the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 195°. The direct cause is the strengthening of the Mongolian High-Pressure System, which pumps dry, cold air into much of Northern China. This is why you get those brilliantly clear, "high and cloudless" skies. The "dew" in the name is literal—moisture in the air condenses into water droplets at night. The "cold" indicates that these droplets are now formed at temperatures much closer to freezing, creating a noticeable chill.

For farmers, Cold Dew is a race against time. In northern regions, it's the final window to plant winter wheat before the ground freezes. The saying goes, "There is no slack time during Cold Dew; planting in the north and harvesting in the south are both urgent." Meanwhile, in the south, it's a crucial period for the final ripening of late-season rice.

For modern urbanites, understanding Cold Dew is key to staying healthy. Here’s your practical guide:

Combat Dryness (Qiū Zào): The cool, dry air can cause what Traditional Chinese Medicine calls "Autumn Dryness"—sore throat, dry skin, and cough. Counter it by eating moistening foods like pears, sugar cane, and mushrooms. A classic remedy is pear soup with rock sugar.

Keep Warm, Especially Your Feet: As the saying advises, "Don't show your feet after Cold Dew." Your feet have many acupoints and poor circulation, making them susceptible to the cold. Start wearing socks and consider warm foot soaks at night to promote blood flow and better sleep.

Get Outside (Wisely): The cool, stable weather is perfect for outdoor exercise. "Ascending heights" to see the autumn foliage is a highly recommended activity. The physical activity and beautiful scenery are proven mood boosters, helping to ward off any seasonal blues.

In essence, Cold Dew is nature's nudge to prepare. It's time to store the summer clothes, adjust your diet, and enjoy the invigorating fresh air before the deep cold of winter sets in. It’s a solar term that is as practical as it is beautiful.
